The little brother of the Para Military 2 – now in the Salt Series

The Para Military 2 is one of the most popular EDC knives in the world. The Para 3 manages to pack the same ergonomics, the same Compression Lock and the same cutting performance into a more compact package – with a 74mm blade instead of the PM2's 87mm. For the Salt Series, Spyderco took the Para 3 one step further: every component is designed for maximum corrosion resistance. The result is a knife that works reliably on the beach, on the boat, or in any weather.

CPM MagnaCut with DLC – the best of both worlds

As an owner-run knife shop in Hamburg, we've handled the Para 3 in many steel variants. Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture – grip that actually grips

The black G10 handle scales are more than just a visual statement. Spyderco has applied their Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture pattern here – arced CNC-machined grooves that radiate from the centre of the handle, providing secure grip in every hand position, even with wet or gloved hands. This isn't a design detail, it's a functional decision for use in and around water.

Compression Lock – one of the strongest locks on the market

The Compression Lock is Spyderco's most ingenious invention: unlike a traditional liner lock, the Compression Lock drives part of the liner between the blade tang and the stop pin. To defeat this lock, the steel liner would literally have to be crushed – which is virtually impossible. The result is a knife you can work with confidently, with full trust in the blade.

Clip & carry options

The clip can be mounted in four positions: left or right, tip-up or tip-down. However, the Compression Lock is fixed on the right side of the handle – the knife is therefore not fully ambidextrous. Left-handed users should take this into account before purchasing.

Is the Para 3 Salt legal to carry in Germany?

The Para 3 Salt features a Compression Lock – the blade locks firmly in the open position. Under §42a of the German Weapons Act it is classified as a one-handed knife and may only be carried in public with a legitimate reason. What is the difference between the Para 3 and the Para Military 2?

The Para 3 is the more compact version of the PM2: shorter blade (74mm vs 87mm), shorter handle, lower weight. The Compression Lock, Spyderhole and ergonomics are identical. If the PM2 feels too large, or you live somewhere with blade length restrictions, the Para 3 is the better choice.

What does DLC coating mean?

DLC stands for Diamond-Like Carbon – an extremely thin, hard carbon coating applied to the blade surface. It adds an extra layer of corrosion protection, reduces reflections and gives the knife its matte all-black finish. The cutting edge itself remains uncoated.

What is the Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture pattern?

A CNC-machined grip pattern developed by Spyderco featuring arced grooves that radiate from the centre of the handle. It provides secure grip in every hand position – particularly useful in wet or gloved conditions.

Is the Para 3 Salt suitable for left-handed users?

Partially. The clip is reversible and can be mounted in four positions, but the Compression Lock is fixed on the right side of the handle. The knife is not fully ambidextrous – left-handed users should factor this in before purchasing.

How do I sharpen a DLC-coated MagnaCut blade?

The DLC coating sits on the blade face only, not on the edge itself – so sharpening works as normal. MagnaCut runs at approximately 61–63 HRC, which means a basic honing steel won't be sufficient. We recommend a whetstone (400–1000 grit) or a quality ceramic rod. For day-to-day maintenance, stropping on leather keeps the edge going significantly longer between full sharpenings.

Spyderco's Para Military 2 is one of them, along with several other models. But for some, this folding knife is a bit too big for everyday use, especially since there is a legal regulation in some US states that only allows blades up to a length of 3 inches. Spyderco have therefore put the PM2 on a diet and the result can now be admired in the form of the Para 3. Well, it's not quite that simple - after all, the Para 3 is much more than just a shrunken version of the classic.Despite the significantly smaller dimensions, the Para 3 also feels absolutely fantastic in the hand, especially when you use the finger choil at the base of the blade. This indentation allows one to guide the knife very close to the cutting edge and thus be able to transfer a lot of force to the cutting motion. The Compression Lock, which at first glance looks like a liner lock attached to the back, provides maximum security through its locking technology, which is due to the fact that here (unlike the liner lock) a part of the plate is pushed between the blade root and the stop pin. So to destroy the lock, the vertically positioned liner would have to be crushed between the blade and the pin, which is virtually impossible. The fully raised flat grind of the blade, which is made of CPM S45V steel, ensures optimal cutting performance and the fine tapered tip also allows for the most precise work. The blade length of exactly 3inches (hence the name of the knife) is still long enough to handle the vast majority of everyday cutting tasks with ease, yet still makes for a much more compact overall package compared to the Para Military 2. Together with the large lanyard hole and the reversible poket clip (making the knife perfectly suitable for left-handers), you get a really robust yet handy pocket knife with the Para 3, which proves to be an absolutely faithful companion in everyday life.

Among Spyderco fans, however, this model has long been an insider tip. Maybe you have ever wanted a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Lightweight? Here you go: the Stretch 2 with the K390 steel blade is basically just that. Well, not exactly, of course. But the similarities between these two models is enormous. First of all, there's the extremely ergonomically shaped handle: thanks to the rounded FRN handle scales, which here have been kept in a very "tooly" steel blue, they fit incredibly well in your hand, so that even longer carving sessions won't cause you any pain. In the middle of the back of the blade you will find Spyderco's famous Mid-Lock, which can be operated effortlessly thanks to the Boye Detent. The biggest similarity to the PM2 can be found in the blade. Thanks to the straight spine and the bulbous tip, you have a real workhorse of a pocket knife. Thanks to the material thickness of only 3mm, cutting with the Stretch is simply fun. The used K390 steel from Böhler is quite an exotic among today's knife steels. This powder-metallurgical tool steel is not only incredibly tough, but also has an insane cutting ability. The pocket clip you can of course convert to all 4 positions and the Stretch 2 thus adapt to your way of wearing. The Para Military 2 - or PM2 - is one of the most popular and versatile knives Spyderco has in its lineup. Originally introduced in 2010, this all-around knife has been improved upon over the years, making this cutting tool an absolutely mature design by now. The incredibly ergonomically shaped handle, is designed for maximum control when working with the knife and allows a variety of ways to guide the blade. Really great is the fingerchoil (an indentation at the base of the blade), which makes it possible to grip the knife very close to the cutting edge to transmit maximum force to the cutting movement. Thanks to the attached filing (jimping), you have an absolutely secure grip even in this position and the knife never threatens to slip away thanks to the gray G10 surface of the handle. The steel plates are recessed into the handle material and generously milled out to save weight. An absolute highlight of the PM2s is the Compression Lock. At first glance, this locking technology looks like a liner lock placed at the rear - but a closer look reveals that it is not. With Compression Lock, the liner moves between the blade root and the back stop pin.
