Raven’s Bornas – Nordic Wave
It's been almost two years since the first Raven’s Bornas was released. Now WESN has handed the helm back to Sam, aka Raven the Pirate, and the two have given their collaborative fixed blade another makeover.
The result is called Raven’s Bornas: Nordic Wave. The foundation remains the Bornas, WESN’s compact full-tang fixed blade, meaning the steel runs all the way from the tip to the end of the handle. For the blade, WESN uses CPM S35VN with a black PVD coating. You'll probably recognize this steel from plenty of high-end mid-tech knives. It holds an edge for a long time while still being relatively easy to sharpen. And being stainless, it couldn't care less about Hamburg's endless drizzle. The WESN logo sits on the front, while Raven has left his laser-engraved mark on the reverse side.
The real update is the handle. Both scales are made from titanium and finished entirely in black. A CNC-machined wave pattern draws inspiration from Viking runestones and Nordic ornamentation. On the original Bornas, only the front was engraved. This time, the entire surface features a raised relief pattern. You'll notice the difference as soon as you run your thumb across it: the texture provides extra grip, even with cold or wet fingers. And it looks like a Norseman with an incredible amount of patience somehow got his hands on a CNC machine.
The knife comes with a black Kydex sheath with a belt clip, the second major difference from the original release, which came with a leather sheath. Kydex clicks securely into place and doesn't mind getting caught in the rain. There's also a specially designed matte black box with gold foil detailing.
So what's it actually for? The Bornas is a small fixed blade designed for everyday carry and outdoor adventures. Opening packages or slicing an apple during a picnic on the banks of the Elbe – neither requires a folding mechanism, and a full-tang knife can handle a little extra pressure when needed. With a blade length of approximately 7 cm, it sits comfortably below Germany's 12 cm limit. Fixed blades of this size are not subject to the general carry restrictions under Section 42a of the German Weapons Act (WaffG), meaning you can generally carry one in everyday life, subject to any additional local restrictions.
Who's it for? Anyone looking to add a compact fixed blade with excellent materials to their EDC kit, or anyone who's a true fan of Raven the Pirate.
