The click pen with a safety button

You’re signing a delivery note on your knee, your thumb slips onto the plunger, and halfway through your name the tip is gone. With a regular click pen that happens more often than you’d like. With the TiButton from Nottingham Tactical, the refill stays out until you deliberately retract it.

The TiButton is a titanium click pen made by Nottingham Tactical. The team builds in the USA and machines every part in-house, mechanism included. It’s based on the TiClicker, Lee Nottingham’s first pen, which he designed around the Parker refill – probably the most widespread ballpoint refill there is. In terms of construction the two are almost twins. The difference is a small button on the right side of the clip, which Nottingham spent around two years developing.

How the Single Lock works

To write, you click the refill out as usual. It only retracts when you press the button on the clip, so an accidental click on the plunger won’t pull it back in. The spring confirms the retraction with an audible, satisfying sound. That way you know the tip is in before the pen goes back in your pocket. The Trifecta comes as a right-hand version with Single Lock, with the button on the right side of the clip.

What does the triangular shape do?

The Trifecta is the triangular version of the popular Standard pattern. Each of your three writing fingers gets its own flat, so the pen doesn’t twist while you write and you don’t need to grip as hard. Your hand will notice during long notes – and it won’t roll off your desk anymore either. The TiButton Trifecta comes in three sizes, from the compact Mini for small pockets to the full-size pen for your desk.

Who is the TiButton for?

Anyone who carries a pen every day and actually uses it. The Single Lock really comes into its own for paramedics or on a building site, where you jot things down on the go and the tip mustn’t vanish mid-sentence. Collectors already know the drill – with Nottingham it rarely stops at one pen.

Two years of development for one button sounds like a nerd project. It is. Your next delivery note will thank you anyway.
