Civivi Baby Banter Slip Joint

CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint – the carry-legal EDC for Germany

The CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint is the Germany-legal evolution of the popular Baby Banter – and that's exactly what makes it special. While the classic Baby Banter with Liner Lock cannot legally be carried in public in Germany, the Baby Banter Slip Joint is legal to carry where permitted under § 42a of the German Weapons Act: no locking mechanism, no blade length exceeding 12 cm. You can simply take it with you.

The knife was designed by Ben Petersen – known in the knife community as @ben_banters. With the Baby Banter, Ben created an icon celebrated for its clean lines, precise fit and finish, and unmistakable profile. The Slip Joint brings all of that to the table without any compromise on everyday carry comfort.

The Nitro-V steel blade impresses with a hardness of 59–61 HRC, excellent edge retention, and easy maintenance. The 5.94 cm (59.4 mm / 2.34") blade features a flat grind and stonewash finish – delivering reliable cutting performance with minimal upkeep. The Drop Point profile keeps you in full control of the cut, whether you're opening packages, doing light prep work, or simply carrying a dependable EDC tool.

At 8.33 cm (83.3 mm / 3.28") closed and weighing just 67 g (2.36 oz), the knife disappears effortlessly into any pocket.

The Baby Banter Slip Joint is available in two versions: blue G10 handle scales paired with a gray stonewashed blade – a clean, modern look. Or Cuibourtia wood handle scales with a black stonewashed blade, offering a warmer, more natural aesthetic. Both variants feel premium in hand and make one thing clear: this is not a budget knife in the cheap sense. This is CIVIVI – the value line of WE Knife, that feels anything but cheap.

Under the hood, the knife rides on bronze washers at the pivot for a smooth, consistent action. The blade is opened one-handed via thumb stud. The reversible pocket clip supports tip-up carry for both left- and right-handed users.

In short: the CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint is the perfect EDC knife for anyone who refuses to compromise on design in Germany – while staying firmly on the right side of the law.

Frequently asked questions about the CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint

Is the CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint legal to carry in Germany?

Yes. The CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint is legal to carry in Germany where permitted. As a slip joint knife – with no locking mechanism, meaning the blade does not lock open – it does not fall under the restrictions of § 42a of the German Weapons Act. The blade length of 5.94 cm is well below the 12 cm legal threshold.

What is the difference between the Baby Banter and the Baby Banter Slip Joint?

The classic CIVIVI Baby Banter features a Liner Lock that holds the blade open in a fixed position, which means it cannot legally be carried in public in Germany. The Baby Banter Slip Joint has no locking mechanism – the blade does not lock open – making it legal to carry where permitted under German weapons law.

What is a slip joint knife?

A slip joint knife has no locking blade mechanism. Instead, spring tension holds the blade open. When sufficient back pressure is applied, the blade folds closed again. This design is precisely why slip joint knives are treated as tools rather than prohibited weapons under German law.

What is Nitro-V steel?

Nitro-V is a stainless steel alloy with a high nitrogen content. It offers excellent edge retention, good corrosion resistance, and is easy to resharpen. In CIVIVI knives, Nitro-V is hardened to 59–61 HRC – a well-balanced combination of cutting performance and low maintenance.

How do you open the CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint?

The CIVIVI Baby Banter Slip Joint is opened one-handed via a thumb stud – a small pin at the blade base that allows the blade to be unfolded with the thumb. What makes it legal to carry is not the opening method but the absence of a locking mechanism: the blade does not lock open, keeping it fully compliant with § 42a of the German Weapons Act.

Warning / Safety Notice:

Risk of cuts: The most common hazard when using knives is the risk of cuts. Sharp blades can easily penetrate skin and tissue.

Blade slippage: Improper handling or applying excessive force may cause the knife to slip, leading to uncontrolled movements and potential injury.

Injuries from falling knives: Knives should never be left unsecured or placed near the edge of tables or work surfaces, as they may fall and cause injury.

Dull blades: Dull knives pose a higher risk of injury, as they require more force and are more likely to slip. Knives should therefore be sharpened regularly and properly.

Improper use: Using a knife for purposes other than its intended use (e.g. as a prying tool) can damage the blade and may result in accidents.
